Windows XP: System Restore Cleanup

System restore points can build up and waste space after a while. There is a facility to delete all but the last of these. On a system that had been activly used for four years and never cleaned up, the following results were observed.

Performing The Cleanup

  1. Launch the 'Disk Cleanup' utility and select the 'More Options' Tab.

  2. Click on the clean up button.
    There are three clean up buttons so be sure to click the one associated to the system restore.

  3. Click on 'yes' on the confirmation window.
    Click Yes

  4. Click on 'Ok'
    Click OK

  5. Click on 'Yes' to perform all the disk clean operations that have been chosen.
    Click Yes

  6. The old restore points are deleted and the 'Disk Cleanup' utility closes.
    Click Yes
